In my current game I started as Papal States. The Great Powers also don't like it if you start evicting them from their sphere of influence, so that might also have dropped your relations with them low enough that they decided to invade.

How were you going about becoming a great power? Were you conquering Italian or other states without CBs and generally taking big infamy hits in the process? If your infamy goes over 25, you end up being seen as a major threat to the balance of power and everyone in the entire world gets a free 'War of Containment' casus belli (bellum?) on you, which they will take advantage of. Then again, my game was very much taking advantages of flukes and luck, since all of Italy was out-of-bounds as far as expanding was concerned thanks to the spheres of influence, and becoming a Great Power to qualify for Avant Italia! means that you can't get French help as was historical due to how the AI regards GP alliances in v1.1. My method was to eat Modena at the start of the game since they don't start in a sphere and then spend the next few years burning off the infamy while developing peaceful industrial development and prestige growth, focusing on industrial and especially land techs in order to take on Austria down the line (in my game, Austria was the ascendant star, knocking Prussia out of the Great Powers and regaining Silesia). I did, but I was playing Tuscany, and I never had a problem with everyone swarming on me.
